Zora Neale Hurston was a powerful influence in African American literature during the Harlem Renaissance. She was born January 7, 1891 and died January 28, 1960.

Zora Hurston was born in Nostaslga,Al, but later moved to a small all black town in Florida called, Eatonville. When she was around thirteen her mother died, her father sent her to a private school shortly after in Jacksonville.

After finishing school Zora went to college and it was there that she began writing. Zora's novels did not contain the normal  stories of racism because she lived a somewhat priviledged life.

Every year a festival is held in honor of her life. The festival is called the Zora Neale Hurston Festival of Arts and Humanities.

Zora became famous during the Harlem Renaissance for her novel,  "Their Eyes Were Watching God" . Zora Neale Hurston lived the last ten years of her life writing freelance articles for various newspapers and magazines. She covered major stories that dealt with women and women's issues. In 1926 she published a magazine called "Fire!!". Despite her fame in the 1930's  by the time she died she had no money and was barely known or recognized for her work.

In 1975 Alice Walker wrote a story about Ms. Hurston and published it in the Ms. magazine. This story brought attention to her novels again and renewed the popularity of the authors work. Her novel "Their Eyes..." was made into a movie in 2005. Halle Berry starred in the movie.
